A Message from the Minister….
Dearest Young Harris Memorial UMC,
Happy New Year to everyone! My prayer is that 2017 is a year that our congregation embraces with the love of Christ while engaging the community with the utmost love. May we covenant anew with God to be his hands and feet, to serve as Christ served, and to allow the Holy Spirit to move in ways only He can. This is my utmost prayer as the New Year approaches.
I am grateful for the leadership of this congregation. I am impressed with each passing day by your steadfast and steady commitment to being and doing as Jesus. If I have not already done so, thank each of you. Let us all take a minute to be thankful to our leadership. Specifically, Chuck Clark for his long-term role as a leader at Young Harris UMC. He served the last three years as lay leader for us. Before that he served for multiple years as our Staff-Pastor Parish Relations Committee Chairperson. Chuck continues to serve as a leader among the United Methodist Men.
Be sure to also thank, as I will, Patsy Orr who has served as our treasurer for a decade- yes ten years! She will now become our lay leader. We give thanks likewise for James Ammons, Penny Clark, Nancee Tomlinson, and Jack Jones for their leadership as well. Nancee will be taking a half-step to the side to continue to lead us in our endeavors to serve the Latin community here in Athens. Misty Crowley and Mike McLaughlin will co-chair our Missions Team. Jack Jones will continue to lead our Maintenance Team, Gwen Aaron will lead our Ministry Team, Paula Alexander will be our treasurer, and James Ammons will lead our Church Council. Thanks to you and those serving on each committee and council.
May this be our best year ever at Young Harris Memorial United Methodist Church.

The Poinsettias were beautiful this year. They were a little bigger then other years, it made them much fuller looking. Please grab a couple for yourself, a friend, a neighbor after the service on January 1.
January 3- we will be putting all the Christmas decorations away. If you would like to help, please meet in the Fellowship Hall at 10:00 a.m.
A Thank you to the Congregation for the generous appreciation gift to your church staff. We, the staff, are thankful for your kindness, generosity, and support that you give so freely.
House Renovations are going well on the rental house at 50 Prince Place. The house is scheduled to be done the beginning of January.
Sunday Morning Children’s Ministry – Our children will continue using a format similar to what we have used since August with Cave Quest. In October we began “Everest: Conquering Challenges with God’s Mighty Power”. They will have a time of music and worship, Bible storytelling, games, and science on a rotation basis. Invite your friends to join us for this icy expedition at 9:45 a.m. in the FLC.
Music Ministry – Church Music Matters
Chancel Choir – We are looking for new members for the Chancel Choir. The choir leads in worship every Sunday morning and rehearses on Sunday morning 8:15-9:30 a.m. This is a GREAT time to consider joining the Chancel Choir. We are beginning our work on the Christmas Festival music as well as working on music for the Sunday morning worship services. No audition is required for membership in choir – just a desire to serve God through music and lead in worship.
We are very sorry to announce that Dr. Barbara Porter is leaving Young Harris Memorial UMC on January 31, 2017. If you know of anyone who may be interested in this position, please contact Gwen Aaron for more information.
